Role and Responsibilities
Performs phlebotomy and skin punctures on patients according to phlebotomy protocol to obtain suitable specimens for accurate clinical results for patient diagnosis. Provides phlebotomy under the direct supervision of a Phlebotomy Supervisor and is responsible for 1 shift, 8 hours / day, and 5 days / week. Incumbents are subject to overtime and callback as required by AEL.
Principal Accountabilities / Responsibilities
1. Performs phlebotomy and skin punctures and receives other biological fluids for clinical testing using established protocols to assure accurate patient diagnostic results.
2. Collects specimens through proper handling protocol to ensure viability of patient specimens, as well as accurate clinical results.
3. Communicates with patients and/or clients using established protocol to relay an understanding of the phlebotomy and/or testing process.
4. Performs clerical duties to receive, identify, accession, and process specimens using established protocols to facilitate timely and accurate test performance.
5. Contributes to cost containment by appropriate utilization of supplies and accurate documentation of billing information.
6. Completes month end paperwork and spreadsheets to be sent to appropriate department for monitoring.
7. Prepares invoices for outside contract labs.
8. Trains IOP's for the Chattanooga region.
9. Approves time off requests for Chattanooga region IOP's and schedules coverage accordingly.
10. Provides phlebotomy coverage for Chattanooga region as needed.
11. Monthly visits to all Chattanooga region IOP accounts (Madisonville south to Chattanooga, west to Tullahoma, north to Crossville/Jamestown).
12. Assist/provide phlebotomy coverage as needed with the Nashville or Knoxville region.
13. Performs related accountabilities/responsibilities as required or directed.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
Training as acquired in an approved Phlebotomy training program.
Basic computer and telephone skills.
Preferred Skills
ASCP Certification Preferred.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet insurance company requirements.
Prior leadership/supervisory skills.
Environmental Conditions
Work involves continuous exposure to unpleasant working conditions or undesirable elements, may involve exposure to a variety of elements which are potentially hazardous or harmful which require exercise of well defined precautions for protection from injury or illness.
Additional Notes
Work requires little or no physical effort. Lifting or performing other work requiring light physical exertion (up to 30 pounds) is intermittent (not a routine part of the job) and secondary to the job.
